Unfortunately, you can have an STD and not know it because they don’t always present symptoms. If you’re sexually active, consider regular STD and STI testing rather than taking the risk.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the more common STDs with close to 3 million Americans becoming infected every year–most commonly among 14-24-year-olds. Spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex, chlamydia is a bacterial infection that affects all genders. If left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system including pelvic inflammatory disease of PID. When treated accordingly, the initial damage inflicted by this infection often goes unnoticed.

Symptoms of Chlamydia

  • Painful urination
  • Discharge from the penis/vagina
  • Painful sex in women
  • Testicular pain
  • Bleeding between period

Gonorrhea

Gonnorhea is one of the more common infectious diseases. In fact, the CDC estimates that over 700,000 Americans get a gonorrheal infection each year. This infection is caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium capable of infecting all genders. More often than not, gonorrhea affects the rectum, throat, or urethra. In women, gonorrhea can additionally infect the cervix. Commonly spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex, this disease must be treated - especially in women expecting to become pregnant/have a baby. Otherwise, it can be passed on to the child during childbirth.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea

  • Creamy, watery, or greenish vaginal discharge
  • Painful and/or more frequent urination
  • Heavier periods/spotting in-between periods
  • Pain during sex in women
  • Abdominal pain
  • Anal soreness and itching
  • Rectal bleeding or discharge

Trichomoniasis

Trich, short for trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral STI. Caused by a tiny parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis, trich is a treatable infection that often affects women more than it does men. Commonly, those infected with trich don’t have symptoms, making it difficult to be aware of its existence and seek treatment. Luckily, STI testing at home can help you detect this infection in time to treat it accordingly without prolonged issues. In terms of commonality, 2.1% of American women between 14 and 59 are affected, and .5% of men are affected.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis

  • Smelly vaginal discharge that is green/yellow
  • Itchy, burning, red, or sore genitals
  • Painful urination
  • Bleeding after sex
  • More frequent urination

Syphilis

Syphilis is another bacterial infection spread through sexual contact. Beginning as a painless sore of the rectum, mouth, or genitals, it spreads via skin or mucous membrane contact with syphilis sores. Following the initial infection, syphilis bacteria sometimes remain inactive within the body for decades before activating once more. If caught early on, syphilis can be cured with a single shot of penicillin. In all, the global prevalence of syphilis in men is around .5%. Syphilis is more common in men, with only around 2,200 new cases of syphilis in women annually.

Syphilis Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Weight loss
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Hair loss

Herpes

Spread through skin-to-skin contact with infected areas, herpes can be contracted through vaginal, oral, and anal sex, as well as kissing. This highly common virus results in sores on the mouth and/or genitals, causing both pain and irritation. While it doesn’t typically cause serious health issues, it is an infection that stays in your body for life. In America alone, over half the population has oral herpes while 1 in 6 has genital herpes. This STD is caused by two similar viruses: herpes simplex 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex 2 (HSV-2). What makes herpes so unpleasant is its itchy, painful blisters and sores that come and go if left untreated.

Symptoms of Herpes

  • Painful or itchy genitals
  • Small red bumps
  • Tiny white blisters
  • Ulcers - ruptured blisters that ooze or bleed
  • Scabs

HIV

Simply put, HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus attacks the body’s immune system. It is often confused with AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome because if left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS. Caused by a virus, HIV can be spread through sexual contact, illicit drug injection and sharing needles, contact between mother and baby in childbirth, and contact with infected blood. Thankfully, between 2015 and 2019, incidents of HIV infection in the U.S. declined by 8%. As of 2019, the estimated number of annual HIV infections in America was 34,800 or 12.6 per every 100,000 people. Due to its risk, HIV is understandably the most serious STD on this list.

Symptoms of HIV

  • Muscle aches and joint pain
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Painful mouth sores
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea Swollen lymph glands, mostly on the neck

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis or inflammation of the liver is caused by various factors, including toxins, different medications, heavy alcohol use, and some medical conditions. Since the liver is a vital organ that serves several important functions like filtering the blood, processing nutrients, and fighting infections–it is important that you seek testing and treatment if you believe you might have hepatitis. There are five main types of hepatitis, commonly referred to as A, B, C, D, and E.

These variations of hepatitis are of the greatest concern because of the simple fact that they carry the heaviest burden of illness, death, larger outbreaks, and the potential for an epidemic. Symptoms of hepatitis include:

Symptoms of Hepatitis C

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Light-colored stools
  • Jaundice
  • Joint pain
